Prof. Kaoru Hagiwara Abstract

The top quark is the heaviest fundamental particle which we have discovered so far.  It has the strongest coupling with the Higgs boson in the Standard Model of particle physics, that explains all phenomena at and below the energy scale of TeV (Tera or 10^12 electron volt). We expect that the Higgs boson interactions with itself and those with the top quark reveal the mysterious phenomenon called the spontaneous breakdown of the gauge symmetries in the vacuum, that gives rise to all the masses of fundamental particles.  I would like to explain how the Higgs boson interactions affect the spin polarization of the top quark produced together with the Higgs boson at colliders, such as the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) at CERN, and how it can be measured experimentally.
