  Research Interests and achievement
Updated on September 3, 2006

My PhD researches were various. Among them I was mostly concentrated on the study of electron-phonon coupling on Be surface. Beryllium is a very interesting metal in the sense that it is a semimetal with a very large band gap over the brillouin zone, but on the surface, it is free electron-like and there exist very localized surface states, which behave completely different from the bulk states. The electron–phonon coupling strength of the most localized surface state is 3 times larger than the bulk states of Beryllium. From the Photoemission spectra of surface states, I successfully characterized the density of phonon states which dominate the coupling of the localized surface states of Be surface through the temperature dependence of imaginary part of self energies, and the energy dependence of real part of self energy. The further direction I plan to go is to study the interplay between the surface states and the surface lattice behavior, like surface relaxation and surface thermal expansion. In my post-doctor career, I was focused on the quantum well states of metal thin film on semiconductor surface (e.g. Ag /Ge(111)). Thin films are widely employed in device designs. For example, if a film is made of magnetic material, the quantum well states are closely correlated with magnetic properties such as oscillatory magnetic coupling and giant magnetoresistance (GMR), which have been applied to magnetic storage devices. My study on the Ag/Ge(111) system has two important discoveries.

1. The atomically uniform film can be made for this system on a certain deposition and annealing condition.

2. The substrate can strongly modify electronic structures of the thin film. These two findings are certainly important and might lead to the enhancement of certain important properties for the application of thin films. The major experimental technique I use is the Photoemission which is the best tool to detect the electronic band structures and behaviors. I'm cooperating with National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center ( NSRRC) for the Photoemission experiments. In the future, I will also plan to use Low Energy Electronic Microscopy (LEEM) to study the surface morphology and the thin film growth. Currently, I also cooperate with Prof. Hisao Ishii form Chiba university in Japan on the study of the interfacial and molecule orbital electronic structures of organic thin films on metal surfaces. Our aim is to grow crystalline uniform organic thin films on the atomically uniform metal thin films.
